Mumbai City reports

Two Dream India projects - Mobile school van for economically poor pockets of the city and setting up a Computer lab as part of vocational training for children - have been selected to feature in the prestigious CSR-CSO bridge event
to be held in the Grand hotel in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, on the 29th of August, 2011. This event is being organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, CII. Our volunteers in Mumbai prepared and featured these projects in the initial round, and succeeded among more than 50 other participant NGO entries. We will post more updates on the event and our projects soon....

Every year on the eve of Children's day, NGO Pragati organizes Shining Stars event for underprivileged kids to provide them a platform to display their talents. These talented kids are then provided an opportunity to develop their talents by means of several scholarships provided. The different competitions that Pragati organizes are - Drawing, Singing and Dance. Apart from these competitions Shining Stars 2011 was also supposed to have Mehendi competition but due to lack of participants, the plan was dropped by Pragati. But there was a Fun fair this time apart from the different competitions which made the kids even more enthusiastic and happy :) The fun fair included different games like balloon shooting, aiming to break a glass hierarchy, tattoo making, etc and on winnning the games an assured gift was provided. The kids kept playing and showed us the gifts on every win...needless to say that they were damn excited :)

Dream India - Mumbai has been participating in this event for the last 3 years and benefitted a lot from it. Several of our kids had got  admission in dance academies as a part of scholarship  and are still continuing that. 2 examples of the kids who were regular and are extremely benefitted from the dance classes are Vishwanath Mokashi and Geeta Saini. They have been doing several shows of Shiamak Davar and have become quite famous now :). Mayur has also become a famous singing personality now :)

We were a little skeptical on the attendance of kids for the shining stars event this time as 14th November was a Monday. But a week before we found the numbers to be good enough - a count of around 31 kids. So we decided to do a bus as the event was in Dadar and it is quite far from Borivali. Padmaja as usual helped us with the bus and this time the driver charged very nominal - Rs. 3000 for a return journey. Thanks to Padmaja for her efforts in convincing the driver :).

Shailesh & I had taken a holiday on Monday and Sargam too had taken time off to join the event.

As we reached, the kids re-registered in competitions to get a badge for themselves and then we had breakfast. After the breakfast, started the drawing competition. There were some brilliant drawings made by our kids i.e. Amitabh Bachhan, Scenes, etc. Deepak as usual received the prize in drawing competition. Then there was Singing competition and finally the dance competition. For Singing, i would like to provide an update - As every one knows that for the last 3 years we have been winning the 1st prize in singing competition and the one who provides us this honor is Mayur Ingle - 11 years. This year, Pragati had told us that they would start the singing competition with Mayur and give him a gift before starting the competition. They did not wan't Mayur to be in the competition this time as they wanted others to give a chance too. So Mayur was a special guest this time :) But as usual when he sang, he was asked to sing number of times :) He started with Morya Morya marathi song, then Tere mast mast do nain hindi song and was applauded greatly. As Mayur also knows to play casio, he was asked to play casio also and everyone was shocked to see a multi talented boy like him. He was not willing to come down from the stage and neither did people want him to come down but the time was limited so he had to be brought down the stage. We had recorded his video when he was singing the song and the judge had asked to send that video via bluetooth because he wanted to send that to Sa Re Ga Ma Pa competition. The judge was extremely impressed by his performance. Vishwanath Mokashi has started choreographing also now based on his experience of several shows. This time for Shining Stars 2011, he had choreographed a song with some kids and we have won a 3rd prize on his choreography. The competition was very tough and several NGOs like- Doorstep school, Ashansh, Akanksha, etc had participated. Thanks to Vishwanath Mokashi for his efforts to teach other kids and helping them a chance to develop their dance talent. Also, as previous years, Shailesh had helped the kids in their solo dance performances. We had also arranged for their costumes and song CD's a day before. Since there was space crunch at the center, kids did their dance practice at Gawarikar Sir's, Sargam's and my place. I would like to thank Gawarikar Sir and Sargam for their great co-operation. There were 2 prizes in solo Dance performances as well - 2nd prize to Aspak Sheikh - 10 years and 3rd prize to Suraj Saini - 12 years. All the winners will get a scholarship in the form of dance/singing/drawing class and we will be intimated about the same by Pragati.

The kids were provided gifts through the cheif guest of the day - Tarak Mehta aka Shailesh Lodha. As soon as the kids saw him entering the venue, they surrounded him for autographs. Many kids took the autograph and were proudly showing it to us :) Mayur was specially called to sing a song for the chief guest as Tarak Mehta came when the competition was almost over. Tarak Mehta was very impressed by Mayur's singing and gave him 1000 bucks for his collection to purchase a professional casio. Also several of the judges and audiences gave 100 bucks to me to be given to Mayur as a token of appreciation.

At the end, every kid who participated in the event received a certificate and all the kids received a return gift. All in all the event was a very memorable and great event that the kids thoroughly enjoyed and will cherish forever.

A child’s smile is one of life’s greatest blessings…A Pleasing smile of the child makes the nature much more beautiful!!

On 5th October 2013, Toy Tasting visited our NGO to gift the kids & play with them. Support was provided by ‘Online toy store in India’ - Yellow Giraffe in the initiative by Toy Tasting.
2 core team members from Toy Tasting had come with a lot of educational/skill building/fun gifts for the kids and also taught them how to play with them. They had also got a lot of story books for the kids & played with them for a very long time.

Our kids were very excited to receive the gifts and had a very big smile on their faces throughout the day in the pretext of having received the gifts. In addition to this, the educational toys provided would really help the kids in their learning’s. It is very rightly said that – ‘While older generations simply had to memorize facts at school, today's children and young adults learn best by playing’

Dream India would like to thank the ‘Online toy store in India’ & Toy Tasting for making the day of our kids & bringing smiles to their faces!
